I’m not very active on LinkedIn or tech communities and not sure how networking works for programmers. What are some practical ways to start building connections without forcing it?
Most programmers overthink networking, but in reality it’s much simpler and slower than it looks.
Good networking usually starts with doing real work and being visible about it. When you build projects, contribute to discussions, help others debug issues, or share what you’re learning, people naturally notice. This can happen on LinkedIn, GitHub, Discord communities, or even college groups. You don’t need to message strangers asking for referrals on day one.
In my experience, the strongest connections came from working with people, not from cold messages. Teammates from internships, college projects, hackathons, or even online collaborations tend to respond because they’ve seen how you work. Over time, these connections turn into referrals or job leads.
Another important part is consistency. Commenting thoughtfully, helping juniors, or answering questions regularly builds familiarity. Networking is not about collecting contacts. It’s about being someone people remember for the right reasons.
