Are referrals actually useful for freshers?

I keep hearing that referrals help a lot in getting interview calls, but I’m not sure how effective they are for freshers. Do referrals really work, or are they overrated?

Yes, referrals are actually useful for freshers, but they’re often misunderstood.

A referral doesn’t guarantee a job or an interview. What it does is increase the chances that your resume gets seen by a real person instead of getting lost in thousands of applications. For freshers, that visibility itself is valuable.

That said, referrals work best when your profile is already decent. If your resume is weak or you can’t clear interviews, a referral won’t save you. I’ve seen referrals lead to interviews, and then candidates get rejected because they weren’t prepared. The referral only opens the door, you still have to walk through it.

The right way to use referrals is through genuine connections. Seniors, alumni, ex-internship colleagues, or people you’ve interacted with professionally are more likely to help. Randomly messaging strangers asking for referrals rarely works.

So yes, referrals are useful, especially for freshers, but only when combined with solid preparation. Think of them as a boost, not a shortcut.
