Do companies really shortlist students based on CGPA?

I’ve heard mixed opinions about CGPA cutoffs during placements. Does CGPA actually matter that much for shortlisting, or is it just for initial filtering?

Yes, companies do use CGPA for shortlisting, but it’s not the full story.

CGPA is mostly used as a filter, especially in campus placements. When a company gets thousands of applications, they need an easy way to reduce numbers, so they set a cutoff. That doesn’t mean higher CGPA means better engineer, it just makes shortlisting simpler for them.

From my experience, CGPA matters mainly in the initial stage. Once you clear the cutoff and get into interviews, it barely matters. At that point, your problem solving, projects, and how you explain things matter much more.

Also, not all companies are strict about CGPA. Many startups and off-campus roles don’t care about it at all if you can show real skills. So if your CGPA is low, don’t panic. Clear the basics, build solid projects, and apply smartly outside campus as well.

Think of CGPA as a door opener for some companies, not a final judgement on your ability.
