Which supply chain skills are useful in a Data Science career?

I have experience in supply chain management and want to explore a career in data science. Which existing skills, such as demand forecasting, inventory management, and data analysis, are useful in this field, and what additional technical skills should I learn?

Supply chain experience can be a real advantage in Data Science because you already work with business problems involving demand, inventory, costs, and delivery performance.

Some useful transferable skills are:

  • Demand forecasting: Helps with time-series analysis and predictive modelling.
  • Inventory management: Useful for predicting stockouts and optimising stock levels.
  • KPI analysis: Builds your ability to measure performance and identify trends.
  • Root cause analysis: Helps investigate patterns and understand why problems occur.
  • Supplier and logistics analysis: Useful for predicting delays, costs, and supplier risks.

To make the transition, learn SQL, Python, statistics, and Machine Learning, then build projects such as demand forecasting or delivery-delay prediction using supply chain datasets.

You could start with Supply Chain Data Analyst or Forecasting Analyst roles and progress toward Data Scientist positions as your technical skills develop.
