What is the step-by-step roadmap for a Supply Chain Specialist to become a Data Scientist?

I’m a Supply Chain Specialist looking to transition into data science. What step-by-step roadmap should I follow, which technical skills and tools should I learn, and how can I use my supply chain experience to build a successful career in data science?

A Supply Chain Specialist already understands inventory, demand, logistics, and operational metrics, which can be useful in Data Science. I’d follow this roadmap:

  1. Learn SQL and Excel to work with inventory, shipment, and sales data.
  2. Learn Python using pandas, NumPy, and data visualisation libraries.
  3. Build a statistics foundation covering probability, correlation, and forecasting.
  4. Learn Power BI or Tableau to analyse and present supply chain performance.
  5. Study Machine Learning for demand forecasting, inventory prediction, and delivery-delay analysis.
  6. Build 2–3 projects, such as demand forecasting, inventory optimisation, or supplier performance prediction.
  7. Apply for relevant roles like Supply Chain Data Analyst or Forecasting Analyst, then progress toward Data Scientist positions as your modelling skills grow.

Focus on applying each skill to supply chain problems you already understand. Your domain knowledge can help you stand out, but practical projects and strong technical skills will be important for the transition.
