Which skills should a financial analyst learn for data science?

I’m working as a financial analyst and want to upgrade my skills to explore data science. I already work with numbers and reports, but I’m not sure which new tools or skills I should learn first.

If you’re a Financial Analyst looking to move into Data Science, I’d focus on building your technical skills step by step. Your existing knowledge of financial reports, KPIs, and business performance is already a good foundation.

I’d prioritise these skills:

  • SQL: To query and manage financial datasets.

  • Python: Learn pandas and NumPy for data cleaning and analysis.

  • Statistics: Understand probability, correlation, hypothesis testing, and regression.

  • Data visualisation: Use Power BI or Tableau to present insights.

  • Machine learning: Learn forecasting, classification, and model evaluation.

  • Practical projects: Try cash-flow forecasting, credit-risk prediction, or unusual transaction detection using sample financial data.

If you’d prefer a structured learning path rather than learning everything separately, you could explore the Data Science Course.

My suggestion is to learn SQL and Python first, then build a couple of finance-related projects before moving into machine learning. That way, you’re using your existing finance experience while gradually developing the skills needed for Data Science roles.

Since you’re already a financial analyst, you have a good starting point! I’d recommend learning Python, SQL, statistics, and data visualization first. Once you’re comfortable with these, move on to machine learning and predictive analytics.

You can practise with projects like financial forecasting, expense prediction, or customer spending analysis. These will help you apply your existing finance knowledge to real data science problems.

I did the HCL GUVI Data Science course, so you can check it out if you’re looking for a structured way to learn these skills. My suggestion is to learn alongside your current job and build a few solid projects before making the switch. :slightly_smiling_face:
