For most finance professionals, data analytics is the easier starting point because it builds on existing skills in reporting, budgeting, and financial analysis. Learn Excel, SQL, and Power BI to explore Finance Data Analyst or Business Analyst roles. If you enjoy coding, statistics, and predictive modelling, you can move toward data science by learning Python and machine learning. Choose based on your career goals, and consider the HCL GUVI Data Science Course to build practical skills.

I’d say Data Analytics is usually the better starting point for a finance professional, especially if you’re already working in accounting, financial reporting, or FP&A.

Data Analytics lets you use your existing finance knowledge to analyse budgets, track KPIs, build dashboards, and improve business decisions. You can start with Excel, SQL, and Power BI without needing to dive straight into advanced coding.

Data Science is a better fit if you’re interested in Python, statistics, machine learning, and predictive modelling—for example, forecasting cash flow or building credit-risk prediction models. It generally requires a deeper technical learning curve.

My suggestion would be to start with Data Analytics and build a few finance-related projects. If you enjoy coding and predictive analysis, you can gradually move toward Data Science later.

You don’t have to leave your finance background behind. Combining finance expertise with analytics skills can open up opportunities in financial analytics, BI, risk analysis, and FP&A. The best choice depends on whether you prefer analysing business performance or building predictive models.
