How much more do data scientists earn than financial analysts?

I’ve been comparing different career options in finance and data science lately. Salary is one thing I’m curious about, so I want to know how much data scientists usually earn compared to financial analysts.

Data Scientists can earn more than Financial Analysts in India, but the difference depends on your experience, technical skills, and the company you join.

If you’re currently working in finance or accounting and considering a switch, I’d suggest taking these steps before making a decision:

  • Start with Excel, SQL, and Power BI to build a foundation in data analysis.
  • Learn Python and basic statistics if you want to move toward Data Science.
  • Build 2–3 finance-related projects, such as cash-flow forecasting, expense analysis, or fraud detection, to show employers how you can apply data skills.
  • Explore Financial Data Analyst or Risk Analyst roles first if you want to use your existing finance experience rather than start in a completely new field.

Data Science can offer strong earning potential, but you don’t necessarily need to become a Data Scientist to grow your career. Combining your finance knowledge with analytics skills can also open up valuable opportunities. I’d build those skills while working and compare actual job requirements before deciding whether a full career switch makes sense.

From what I’ve seen, data scientists generally earn more than financial analysts, especially as they gain experience and develop skills in Python, machine learning, and statistics. In India, data scientists can earn around ₹6–12 LPA at the entry level, while experienced professionals can earn significantly more. Of course, salaries depend on the company, location, experience, and skills.

I was interested in moving into this field too, so I did the HCL GUVI Data Science course. It helped me understand the skills needed to work with data and build a foundation for a data science career.

If you enjoy working with numbers and solving business problems, both careers are good options. But if you’re interested in Python, machine learning, and predictive analytics, I’d definitely explore data science!
