I’m interested in getting into Data Science, but I’m not sure which role is the best starting point. There are so many options like Data Analyst, Junior Data Scientist, ML Engineer, and BI Analyst that it’s a bit confusing.
For those already in the field, which role would you recommend for a beginner? Also, what skills or tools should I focus on learning first to become job-ready?

For most beginners, Data Analyst is the best entry-level role in data science because it helps you build a strong foundation in working with data and generally has more opportunities than Data Scientist or ML Engineer positions. To become job-ready, focus on learning SQL, Python (especially Pandas and NumPy), Excel, statistics, and data visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau. Once you’re comfortable analyzing data and creating insights, you can start learning machine learning concepts and work on real-world projects to build a portfolio. This path makes it much easier to transition into more advanced data science and machine learning roles later on.
If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend aiming for a Data Analyst role first. It helps you build a strong foundation in SQL, Python, Excel, data visualization (Power BI/Tableau), and basic statistics, all of which are valuable if you later move into Data Science or ML.
Once you’re comfortable working with data and real-world problems, transitioning to a Junior Data Scientist role becomes much easier.

Basic Machine Learning
The key is to build a few solid projects, they’ll help your resume stand out more than just completing courses.
