What skills should an ERP Functional Consultant learn to transition into Data Analytics?

I’m working as an ERP Functional Consultant and thinking about moving into data analytics. I already have experience with business processes, but I’m not sure which tools and skills I should learn to make the switch.

If you’re an ERP Functional Consultant, you already have a good foundation for moving into data analytics because you understand business processes, workflows, and operational data.

I’d recommend starting with Excel, SQL, and Power BI, followed by basic statistics and Python. You can practise using ERP-related projects, such as sales reports, inventory analysis, or financial dashboards, to connect your existing experience with your new skills.

I also found the HCL GUVI Data Science Course helpful for structured learning and hands-on projects. You can explore the course here and check whether its curriculum fits your career goals.

Your ERP knowledge is an advantage, so focus on adding technical skills rather than starting from scratch. Roles like Business Analyst, ERP Data Analyst, and Data Analyst could be good options to explore.

As an ERP Functional Consultant, you already understand business processes, workflows, and enterprise data. That knowledge can be useful when transitioning into Data Analytics.

I’d recommend learning these skills in order:

  • Excel: Data cleaning, reporting, and analysis.
  • SQL: Querying ERP databases and extracting business insights.
  • Power BI or Tableau: Building dashboards for finance, sales, inventory, or operations.
  • Statistics: Understanding trends, comparisons, and performance metrics.
  • Python: Useful for automating analysis and handling larger datasets.

Start with a project using ERP-related data, such as inventory analysis, sales trends, or financial reporting. This will help you connect your functional knowledge with practical analytics skills.

You can target roles like ERP Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, or Business Analyst. Your understanding of ERP systems is an advantage; focus on demonstrating that you can turn business data into actionable insights.
