Is company-specific preparation better than general prep?

I see people preparing only for specific companies, while others focus on general aptitude and coding. Which approach actually helps more, especially during campus placements?

It depends on where you are in your preparation.

General preparation should always come first. Strong basics in aptitude, DSA, core subjects, and one programming language help you across many companies. This gives you flexibility and keeps more options open, especially when you’re not sure which companies will visit your campus.

Company-specific preparation works best once your basics are clear and you’re shortlisted for a particular company. At that stage, focusing on the company’s interview pattern, past questions, tech stack, and role expectations can give you an extra edge.

In short, start with general prep to build a solid base, then switch to company-specific prep when interviews are close. Doing only company-specific prep too early can limit your chances if plans change.
