I recently got a Python Developer offer in India but feel the salary is slightly lower than expected. How should I negotiate professionally?
First of all, congrats. Getting the offer means they want you — that’s your leverage.
In India, negotiation is normal. Just don’t make it emotional. Make it data-backed.
Before negotiating:
-
Check market range for your experience level (Glassdoor, AmbitionBox, talking to peers).
-
Be clear about the number you want and the minimum you’ll accept.
When you respond, stay professional and appreciative. Something like:
“Thank you for the offer. I’m really excited about the role. Based on my experience in X, Y, and current market standards, I was expecting something closer to ₹___. Is there flexibility on the compensation?”
Keep it calm and confident. Don’t threaten or compare aggressively.
If base salary can’t move, you can negotiate:
-
Joining bonus
-
Performance bonus
-
Early appraisal cycle
-
Remote flexibility
Most important: don’t negotiate just because you feel you should. Negotiate if you genuinely bring value and have reasoning.
Are you a fresher or experienced? Strategy changes slightly based on that.
