How long does it take for an accountant to become a data analyst?

I mostly work with spreadsheets, bills, and financial reports, but lately I’ve been curious about data analytics. I’m thinking of learning some new tools and exploring a different career path, but I have no idea how long the switch might take.

If you’re working as an accountant and learning alongside your job, around 4–8 months can be a reasonable target to build the core skills and projects needed to start applying for Data Analyst roles. The actual job search may take longer, depending on your starting point and the market.

I’d start with Excel, then learn SQL and Power BI. Since you already understand financial records and reporting, practise with projects like expense analysis, budget comparisons, or cash-flow dashboards. That way, you’re building on your accounting experience rather than starting from scratch.

My suggestion is to set aside a few hours each week, build 2–3 solid projects, and start applying once you can confidently explain your analysis. You don’t need to master every tool before taking that first step.

I’d say around 3–6 months is a reasonable starting estimate if you study consistently, though it can take longer depending on your schedule and practice. Since you already work with spreadsheets and financial reports, you have a good foundation.

I’d start with advanced Excel, then learn SQL and Power BI, followed by basic Python. Try building projects like expense analysis and financial dashboards to show employers what you can do.

I did the HCL GUVI Data Science course, so you can check it out if you want a structured way to learn data skills. My advice is to keep practising alongside your current job and build a small portfolio before applying. :slightly_smiling_face:
