How do I get a data analyst job after 1-3 years in customer support?

I’m curious about how someone with 1–3 years of customer support experience can move into a data analyst role. Would learning Excel, SQL, Power BI, and Python be enough to get started, or do employers expect relevant experience too? Would love to hear from anyone who’s made a similar career switch.

I’d suggest starting with Excel, SQL, and Power BI, then learning Python if you want to expand your skills. Your customer support experience can be an advantage, especially if you’ve worked with reports, customer trends, or problem-solving.

Along with learning, try building 2–3 projects and adding them to your portfolio. Employers often look for practical skills, so projects can help demonstrate what you’ve learned even without direct data analyst experience.

Since you already have customer support experience, try looking at the data side of your current work. Things like ticket volume, resolution time, and customer feedback can give you ideas for practice projects.

You don’t need to learn everything at once. Start with SQL and Power BI, practise with real datasets, and gradually build your confidence. If you prefer learning with some guidance, HCL GUVI’s Data Science Zen Class is also worth checking out.
