# How can an FP&A manager become a finance analytics lead?

I’m curious how an FP&A manager can move into a finance analytics lead role. Would experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting be a strong foundation, or would they need to build skills in tools like SQL, Python, and Power BI? Has anyone made a similar transition?

I think budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting are already a strong foundation for moving into finance analytics. You understand the business side, so the next step is learning how to use data tools to analyze trends and make better decisions.

I’d start with Power BI and SQL, then learn Python if your role requires more advanced analysis or automation. Try building projects around financial dashboards, variance analysis, and forecasting using real-world scenarios.
