Why do we say data is the new oil?

Okay, you might have heard this, I think oil is what gives money I suppose in the last century at least. And many countries which had oil were able to sell it and make money out of it. I think data is also the source of value today in a digital world, where people are constantly interacting with digital products, the data that you generate, that is quite valuable. In that sense, people make this quotation.
